In the spirit of the Holidays, PUPPIE LOVE™ IS GIVING THEIR LARGEST DONATION TO DATE OF $10K! Divided between two wonderful recipients, the Southside SPCA (Meherrin VA), and The Haven (Fairhope, AL).
The first recipient is the Southside SPCA, an independent, donor-supported, nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of companion animals in Southside Virginia. We were introduced to the Southside SPCA through one of our wonderful customers, Sleeping Bee, who generously donates $3 for every Puppie Love™ shirt sold in their store to the organization.
This wonderful group has provided rescue, shelter, medical treatment, spay/neuter, and adoption services to over 45,000 puppies, kittens, cats, and dogs since operations began in 1975. The Southside SPCA is a no-kill shelter operating mostly with volunteers. The organization serves twelve largely rural, counties in Southside Virginia. In addition to their main operating shelter, they also run a training and rehabilitation center for hounds and older dogs. Since they began operating, euthanasia rates in the county pounds in their service area have dropped from almost 100 percent to an average of 37 percent today!
Puppie Love™ also donated products for the Southside SPCA’s 6th annual fundraising event which raised $20,000 for our furry friends in need!
Steve Smelcer from Southside SPCA shared an amazing rescue story with us, that we want to share with you:
“Every day the Southside SPCA directors are prepared for the unexpected. But what they weren’t prepared for is the call for help they received in February of this year. Animal control officers in rural southern Virginia happened upon a property, off an old logging road, where they discovered a massive number of dogs in need. Without the knowledge or resources to handle a rescue of this magnitude, they needed our assistance. After a week of careful planning and organizing, the Southside SPCA led a team of over 10 groups from Fredericksburg, Stafford County, Northern, VA, and beyond. At the crack of dawn, on a cold Monday morning, a caravan of over 15 transport vans and trailers headed down I-95 to help.
We convened at the local county offices, where Southside SPCA staff briefed the rescue organizations. From there we descended on the property and efficiently and gently removed 94 dogs.
Every group worked tirelessly and stretched their resources to save as many dogs as they could. We rescued Hounds, Labs, Pitbulls, Dachshunds, Beagles, Chihuahuas, and many other breeds and mixes. Ultimately 98 dogs in total were rescued. The Southside SPCA brought together many groups with the sole purpose of making a difference in the lives of these dogs in need. We made some amazing new friends that day and learned, when it comes to rescue, it truly does “take a village”.

The second recipient is The Haven for Animals in Fairhope, AL. We were introduced to The Haven for Animals from another one of our long-time customers, Shoe Station. The Haven rescues, re-habilitates, and re-homes over 900 animals each year serving Baldwin County since 2000. The non-profit animal shelter is responsible for leading the four municipal animal control shelters into creating a no-kill society for companion pets, caring for over 70 homeless cats and dogs at the shelter on any given day, and finding loving homes for these homeless, injured, neglected and abused and abandoned animals. All animals are vaccinated, evaluated both behaviorally and medically, fed, watered and marketed until they find their forever home.
